As a part of my #SelfieSeries, I searched the webs for a great blog survey to use. I snagged this one from Julie at Running in a Skirt! Go check her out and send her some love while you’re there! Her blog is all about helping you live your happiest life. Isn’t that what we are all looking for at the end of the day? She’s got some pretty great healthy lifestyle and healthy recipes up on her blog, too! 🙂
I started the #SelfieSeries so you can learn a little more about me and who is writing all of these stories that are posted. I hope you enjoy reading! I really enjoy writing them!

Do you have any nicknames?
Yeah, I guess I do. My legal name is Karlene, but I go by Karlie. Also, my friends where I grew up call me, “Kar.” I also have a few friends that call me, “Karl.” I’m not too sure why I stay friends with them, though. 😉
Are you named after anyone?
Yes! My first name, Karlene is a mix between my mom and my maternal grandmother. My mom’s middle name is Kay + my grandma’s middle name was Arlene = Karlene. My middle name, Lorraine, was my paternal grandmother’s middle name. So it was built on a strong foundation of bad ass women in my family.
Do you have any siblings?
I have a brother who is 21 years older than I am! I was also lucky to gain 3 step-sisters in my adult life who are all older than me, too!
Where did you grow up?
Mt Clare/Gillespie, IL. It’s a tiny, tiny town tucked away in cornfields that you’ve never heard of. I hated it growing up, but am very thankful it’s where I was raised now.
What activities did you do in high school?
Oh my! I did a lot of activities. I was a cheerleader, I was on student council, I tended to volunteer for the committees to help with dances and such. Um… I tumbled, I was in choir for a bit, I worked. I definitely kept myself busy.
Where did you go to college?
I did my undergraduate and graduate work at Eastern Illinois University! EI-EI-EIU!
What activities did you do in college?
LOL – I didn’t. I was a part of my school’s National Student Speech, Language, and Hearing Association, but that was it. I wasn’t a super active member, either. I was a bum. I selfishly spent my time drinking and doing weird things with my friends instead of participating in “things that will make my resume look better.” I turned out fine.
What did you study in college?
Communication Disorder and Sciences – AKA Speech-Language Pathology.
What was your first job out of college?
Technically, it was a nanny while I was waiting for my licenses to get approved. But, my first “real” job was a Speech-Language Pathologist in skilled nursing facilities with the geriatric psychiatric population.
What kind of music do you like?
Good music? I know that’s not an answer, but I like any genre if it’s good. I lean toward country music most of the time, though.
What’s one hobby that you’d like to take up?
Playing the trumpet. I know how to play the guitar, several types of saxophones, and can dabble on the piano. I’ve always wanted to learn the trumpet..
What did you think you wanted to be when you grew up?
When I was a wee little kid, I wanted to work at WalMart because I like scanning things. In first grade, I had a brief stint of wanting to be a bus driver because I liked opening the doors. I went into college a Psychology major wanting to focus in criminal or forensic psychology, but then switched my Sophomore year to Speech-Language Pathology. I graduated with that, but am still trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up!
What’s the biggest project on your to-do list right now?
Do you have any irrational fears?
Wood chippers….. The thought of being put inside one feet first feeling it grind away at you terrifies the shit out of me.
Have you ever traveled outside the country? If so, where?
Yes! 🙂 If you follow my blog, you know I’m a travel blogger. If this is your first time, now you know! I have been to Canada, Mexico, Italy, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Netherlands, England, Iceland, Denmark, Czech Republic, Austria, and Hungary!
When’s your next vacation and where are you going?
Right now, we don’t have a big trip planned and it’s bumming me out. I’ll be going to Florida for Christmas and to California for some weddings next year. But other than that, we don’t have anything planned.
Do you speak any other languages?
No. 😦 I so badly wish I did. I took 2 years of Spanish in high school, but it was a joke. I can get by in a basic conversation, though. I can also get by in basic sign language.
What’s one talent that you wish you had?
I wish I could sing. I am able to play a variety of instruments, but singing is just one that I’m awful at.
What’s something that you wish you could do one more time?
I wish I could hang out with my grandparents and dad. My grandpa passed away when I was 15, my grandma when I was 19, and my dad when I was 21. I would love to just hang out and talk to them all in one room one more time. Now that I’m older, I have so many questions I wished I asked all of them.
If you weren’t in your current job, what would you want to be doing?
Hmmmm. Do I have some sort of steady income? Because if I do and money didn’t matter, I would buy a lot of land and have a farm for rescue dogs and animals. If money did matter, I think I’d really like to be a doctor of some sort. Maybe with neurology? I love the cognitive side of my current job and have always wanted to go to medical school. It would be super fun to combine the two.
I’ll follow Julie at Running in a Skirt‘s lead and go ahead and tag all bloggers to take this survey and post it on their blog! It’s a great way for your readers to learn about you and also to break up posts that take a lot of prep time. Win-win, yeah? Do you have fun surveys on your blog? I’d love to use them if you’re willing to share! Drop me a comment with your favorite surveys or questions you want answered!
